Lakes of Kenya
The landscape of Kenya is made up of various lakes with unique ecological wonders and breathtaking beauty.
Most of the lakes are found within the Great Rift Valley thus posses alkaline and freshwaters .
Lake Nakuru is the most famous lake because of its spectacular flocks of flamingoes spotted around the shores . The lake is found within Lake Nakuru National park and visiting the lake offers opportunities of viewing other wildlife species such as rhinos , lions , leopards and other bird species. The lake covers a surface area of approximately 45 sq km and is fed by various seasonal rivers and one perennial Ngosur River .
Lake Bogoria is another famous lake in Kenya known for its geysers and hot springs that bubble along its shores . The lake is located in Baringo county about 120km north of Nakuru city . Just like Lake Nakuru , lake Bogoria as well attracts large populations of flamingoes . The surrounding reserve is a home to kudus and zebras offering a more scheduled safari experience compared to busier parks .
More to that is lake Baringo which is found in the further north after Lake Turkana . The lake has a surface area of about 130 sq km and is fed by several rivers like the molo , perkerra and Ol Arabel .
Lake Baringo supports various fish species like Tilapia and catfish which sustain the neighboring communities . The lake also supports about 470 bird species like fish eagles , herons and king fishers etc .
Hippos and crocodiles as well bask along the shores thus tourists can have amazing encounters with them .
Another hidden gem is Lake Naivasha found outside the town of Naivasha in Nakuru county which lies north west of Nairobi. The lake is surrounded by lush flower farms and acacia woodlands .

Another known lake is Lake Turkana in northern kenya . The lake is the largest permanent desert lake in the world and is known as the Jade sea for its striking blue green waters . The lake is a UNESCo World heritage site because of its natural beauty and archeological significance. The lake is a home to nile crocodiles , hippos and diverse fish species among others .
