Kenya ‘s forests are one of the most diverse and ecologically significant covering about 3.5 million hectares of land in the country .

The forests are categorized into five main types that is montane rainforests , Savannah woodland forests , dry forests, coastal forests and mangroves.

 

The montane rainforests are found in highland areas like Mount Kenya and are characterized by dense multi layered canopies with tall trees .

 

Savannah woodland forests are transition zones between open Savannahs and dense forests and are dominated by scattered trees and grassy undergrowth.

 

On the other hand dry forests are arid and semi desert regions and are dominated by hardy and drought resistant trees .

 

Coastal forests are located along the shores of the Indian ocean and are characterized by thick canopies of tall trees and mangroves are brackish water forests featured with salt tolerant trees like red and white mangroves .

 

One of the most famous Forests in Kenya is Ololua forest located in Karen Nairobi county . The forest covers an area of 618 hectares featured with hardwood tress such as silver oak and brown olive . Tourists visiting the forest will pay ksh 200 for citizens , ksh 400 for residents and ksh 600 for non citizens.

 

Another forest is the Ngare Ndare forest one of the largest in Kenya located in Meru county. The forest covers an area of about 5554.3 hectares . This forest is a montane rainforest at the northern foothills of Mount Kenya . The forest is a home to  a large population of elephants thus a perfect place for a wildlife safari .

 

More to that is the Kiambicho forest also known as the Kiambicho kiamuti forest . The forest is located in Maragua sub county kiharu constituency Murang’a county . The forest is one of the dry forests however it is a home to animals such as hyenas , monkeys , among others . Kiambicho Kiamuti forest is under the custodianship of Kenya forest Service .

 

Beyond that is the Eburu forest another large forest located in Eburu Maruk ward , Gilgil sub county , Naivasha , Nakuru county . The forest covers an area of 8,715.3 hectares . The forest is found between lake elementia , Naivasha and Nakuru . The forest is made up of indigenous trees such as Prunus africana and juniperus procera .

The forest is a home to critically endangered mounatin bongo antelopes also known as the ghost of the forest and there are about 100 left in the forest .

 

Other forests in Kenya are ; kereita forest , Ragia forest , Mutarakwa forest , kimakia forest , kinei forest ,Njigari Bamboo forest Nyanduma forest among others .

 

Kenya ‘s forests contribute significantly to the country’s economy through the timber industry and ecotourism centered around forest reserves .

Despite their importance , the forests still face challenges like deforestation, agriculture expansion among others . However the Kenyan government in partnership with other stakeholders have implemented conservation measures like stricter penalties for those carrying out deforestation, community based conservation initiatives and reforestation initiatives.

 

In conclusion , kenya ‘s forests are not just clusters of trees but lifelines that sustain biodiversity and ecosystems of the country.
