Kakamega Forest Birding Trip: Kakamega is one of the best birding destinations in Kenya. Located in Kakamega and Nandi Counties. In the western region of Kenya, near the border of Uganda. This is the only tropical rainforest in Kenya where birders have a great chance of spotting a thousands of birds in the same habitat.
Kakamega forest does not only host birds but also mammals such as forest hedgehogs, bush pigs, Vervet monkeys, pottos and debrazzar monkeys. Numerous species of birds can as well be spotted in this forest including but not limited to; turner’s eremomela, black billed turaco, blue headed bee-eater, to mention but a few.

- Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Nairobi National Park.

Detailed Itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Nairobi National Park.
You will meet our safari driver at the Airport who will take you through the briefing and then set off. Have a lunch picnic in the park at the Impala point or other scenic view points as you will be guided by your safari driver. You will reach the lodge in the late evening, check-in your hotel accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Nairobi National Park to Olorgesailie; back to Nairobi.
Wake up in the early morning, have breakfast and set off to Olorgesailie along the eastern rift valley. Here you will spot a number of birds which are rift valley endemics. Drive along Lake Magadi – Nairobi road which presents a million chances of bird viewing on the shores of this magical lake. Spend your entire day in the forest, and later drive back to your lodge in Nairobi for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer to Kakamega Forest for birding.
You will wake up, grab a cup of coffee/tea, check-out of the lodge and straight to the road. You will head to Kakamega forest which is located 5 hours’ drive away from Nairobi. Upon arrival, begin to track down a great number of birds. Including the Black-billed and Viellot’s Black, Great Blue Turaco, Black and White Casked Hornbill, Blue Headed Bee Eater, Emerald Cuckoo and Weavers.
After this full day birding excursion. You will retire back to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Morning birding expedition and departure.
Wake up in the early morning, greet your tummy with delicious breakfast. Checkout of the lodge and set off for the last day’s birding experience. Here you will be in search of Aberdare Cisticola, sharper’s long claw, wing-snapping, great crested grebe, lesser jacana and more.
You will continue with the trail as you exit the forest back to Nairobi Airport with lunch enroute. Depending on your flight time, the driver might drop you at the hotel or at the Airport for your next destination.
